A real rpg.

Game:
Illarion

Okay, so you see the word "mmorpg" and you think WoW and Runescape etc. etc.

However, you never really think about what this implies. Why on Earth are these actually called roleplaying games? Simply because NPCs etc. treat your character as a character and you are controlling a character, but couldn't this also be said for fps?

This is what separates Illarion from most other Mmorpgs (though "morpgs" might be a better description here). Rather than being your standard "kill stuff, do actions, level up, get to level x, dominate for a bit, get the best items in the game, make a new character" and following this repetitive pattern, this game can NEVER run out of activities. It's up to the players to make these. If you find this game boring, it's most likely because you're boring/have a lack of imagination etc. If you're a fan of western fantasy literature, e.g. LotR, this game may be for you, especially if you're into DnD etc.

You treat your character as a separate entity, who doesn't know of your existence or your computer or your keyboard. Any out of character speech is to be used in (( )) and should be kept to a bare minimum to keep the roleplaying environment and any abbreviations like "u" instead of "you" are looked badly upon, as this game world is meant to flow as a piece of literature. Your character can do anything within reason, with the handy #me command, used for emoting one's actions. Therefore the possibilities are endless.

There are frequent GM controlled quests, which are very interesting. Lich wars etc.

Also, you have control over the game world. I've been playing 3 years now, and my character owns his own town. Speaking of which, the main town actually has elections and chooses governors.

The map is beautiful and there are tonnes of hidden locations with special features. For the fighter there are many monsters, and just because this is a roleplay based game doesn't mean fighting etc. is basic. Hardcore gamers won't be disappointed by the difficulty level of the engine based systems, like crafting, fighting, but theoretically a pure rper doesn't ever need to encounter these things, so there's something for everyone, but this isn't the game to join if you just wish to dominate everything. Fighting etc. is preferred to be done casually for fun and not so you can "pwn" with your "1337 skillz". In fact, you don't see levels etc. or values for your skill.

I personally love the graphics, but that's a matter of taste, and they're a vast improvement on the older client that you can see in the screenshots. The retro battle music is also very pleasant to the ears.

There's lots of innovation here, fine graphics, music, gameplay, and for a price of £0.00, this is AMAZING. Any complaints you have with the game's system e.g. bugs will always be extremely minor and are usually fixed very fast by the devoted staff.

I advise anyone who likes the sound to go and play it now; it's a gem.

10/10
