OpenClonk

Release
Version:
3.3
Released:
10 March 2013

Clonk is a multiplayer-action-tactic-skill game. It is often referred to as a mixture of The Settlers and Worms. The inventor of the game is Matthes Bender. He later sold Clonk via his company Redwolf Design.

In Clonk the player controls his crew of Clonks. The classic description of a Clonk is "A small but robust humanoid being. Witty and nimble, if skillfully controlled." The first Clonk was a two player melee game. In a simple earth landscape the players fought with rocks, flints (basic explosives) and catapults. Forming the landscape with digging and blasting to gain a tactical advantage is a most basic function in Clonk. Yet Clonk 1 had some chaotic elements, rain, lightning and monsters.

OpenClonk is the Open source successor of the Clonk gaming series.
OpenClonk is a project dedicated to the further development of the Clonk game series. Our goal is to improve and make the real strengths of Clonk more fun to play: Bustling mining, production lines and economy, fast and fiddly melees. Another focus lies on the further enchancement of the game engine and the extensibility/modability of the game content with C4Script which has always been one of the most important features of Clonk.

This game suffers from a lot of bugs. It could be really fun if they were fixed. I built from the Mercurial repo.

The controls are what I would describe as "god awful" and that's something considering I taught myself Blender. They're twitchy, don't respond half the time, and often cause unintended effects. The grappling hooks are rendered almost completely useless unless you have two of them. The booster rockets are also impossible to control.

There are bugs that make it so you can get stuck on a single pixel of floating rock and can't escape or land or even blow yourself up to get out of it. If there is a suicide key, I couldn't find it.

The documentation is largely missing, incomplete or in another language. I was looking for a list of key commands but there are none. F1 lists some, but the list isn't complete. The tutorial level is just a level and some guy saying "get to the end to exit" which wasn't helpful. I was 6 hours in before I accidentally hit Q and discovered that there was an inventory beyond the two slots.

All that and it actually messes with my X gamma while running in windowed mode.

In conclusion, check back in a few months/years and maybe it'll be more fun/playable. :-/

Only 32bit and not available yet.

What a letdown.

I am going to try and compile the source, but I have a bad feeling about it.

I didn't see that, but still

I didn't see that, but still only 32 bit binaries.

Actually the 32 bit binaries

Actually the 32 bit binaries work just fine with ia32libs on 64bit.

I quite liked the original game, but many little flaws and the outdated resolution made it not so funny to play on my machine. They have been working on many of those "papercuts" maintaining the original look-and-feel of the game.

In my opinion they are doing a fine job with openclonk. I am not happy of the Win-centric development of a game named Open-something, but hey, if it works on Linux I don't have much to complain about.
