The goal of the FlightGear project is to create a sophisticated flight simulator framework for use in research or academic environments, for the development and pursuit of other interesting flight simulation ideas, and as an end-user application. We are developing a sophisticated, open simulation framework that can be expanded and improved upon by anyone interested in contributing.

I installed FlightGear from
I installed FlightGear from my distribution's repository and with the default graphic configuration it does not look impressive at all. It needed some effort for the initial setup, but now it looks as cool as my graphic card can handle and adding new planes and maps is easy.
Note that a launcher like "FlightGear Launch Control" (FGRun) can make your life easier.
The maps are not very detailed, but cities, roads, mountains, rivers, etc. can be recognized. You can also track your plane on google maps. It is funny.
