Battle for Wesnoth is the best!
Battle for Wesnoth is the best OpenSource turn-based strategy/rpg. I think that it may stand in the same line with Heroes Of Might & Magic, Disciples and some more because of breathtaking storylines, juicy artworks, great music and genious idea!
1.10 Rules (plus: anyone tried my add-on Animal?)
This game seems no longer limited. A lot to come with new plan system and plugin support.
A Game=A Rule, now "Battle for Wesnoth" claimed many, its a greater base now.
Anyone say about my add-on animal?

Deserves the top rating :-)
Question though: what are the must-have mods/extensions for this game?
None. Most of the extensions
None. Most of the extensions are either multiplayer scenarios/unit packs or new campaigns (yay!).
Just play it
Open source games usually lack all those small details that make the gameplay fun. The Battle for Wesnoth is not included in this category. All you may expect to be in a strategy game is here, and it gets even better with every new version. It is a must-play.
Great turn-based strategy.
Great turn-based strategy with storyline, very nice graphics, great gameplay. What more could one want.
An example to us all
Wesnoth is the well deserved poster-child for open-source game development. An insanely active community, lots of content and stable code... What more can you want?
Catch22: The game we /all/ play
An RPG too!
There are add-ons which will give you hours of RPG fun, in addition to the standard tactics of the game. Look for the ones made by Bob the Mighty.
This game is highly extensible.
