Arx Fatalis

Release
Version:
1.0.3 - Unofficial! Arx Libertatis
Released:
31 July 2012

Arx Fatalis is a critically acclaimed first-person RPG that takes the player on an amazing journey into the fantasy world of Arx. The game mixes intelligent story with immersive and actual medieval surroundings. Arx Fatalis allows the player to feel that all his actions have a direct consequence on those around him.

The goal of the game is to destroy the secret cult of Akbaa, the god of destruction. As a player, you must prevent the return of such a cruel creature to the physical world. Should you fail, Akbaa is bound to impose its terror upon the world of Arx.

You will become the hero of an underground world - with weapons, spells and magical items to defend against goblins, trolls, rat-men and other vicious opponents.

Besides brute force, stealth and the "onscreen gesture based magic system" are the three alternative ways to succeed. Using the mouse, flaming runes can be drawn in mid-air. A combination of these gestures can create powerful magic spells that will protect you or empower you to defeat opponents and pursue the quest.

Arx Libertatis is a source port based on the publicly released Arx Fatalis source code.

Arx Libertatis 1.0.1 and 1.0.2

The version number here says 1.0, but we're at 1.0.2 now:

1.0.1: Fixes text rendering bug in 1.0 that breaks the Russian version, a crash on some Linux systems and uses DirectX by default for rendering and input under Windows. You can still select the renderer in the video settings and if you set it to anything other than the default "Auto-Select" nothing will change for you.

1.0.2: Fixes various crashes, disappearing items when sorting the inventory, and minor rendering and input bugs. This release also fixes a bug in AL that left the Spanish version with no text.

For the stable releases (1.0+) you no longer need to manually set the language in cfg.ini as the game will now autodetect this.

Also, there are scripts available to unpack the game data, so Wine is no longer needed for that - althrough you need cabextract, innoextract and/or unzip depending on where you got the data from. You will of course still need Wine/Windows to install from Steam.

Open Source?

"Arx Libertatis is a source port based on the publicly released Arx Fatalis source code."

So doesn't that mean it should be classified as Open Source now?

Oh, and so far, it works unbelievably smoothly once installed. Very nice job!

Note that any issues with the AI (rare enemies walk into fires and such), were there with the original game, but there's no crashing. Clean and smooth.

Would be cool to expand it too, like scripting new stuff, adding new models, multiplayer, etc. Even a free resource set would be nice.
