Oh man I remember this game, a must play for everyone! Even if you don't feel like paying for it, or you don't like steam, get yourself non-HD version for free from author's website and run it under wine. It's really good.

Try lowering the graphic settings and setting the -heapsize launch option. The launch options are described here: http://www.nextlevelgamer.com/team-fortress-2/team-fortress-2-launch-opt...

I found this tip in the game forums and it made a big difference for me, but I am not sure if it was the graphic settings, the heapsize or both.
