WebGL browser client

Manic Digger - Thu, 10/25/2012 - 19:35

I’m trying to make a web browser version of the game using JavaScript, WebGL and Script#. New client will not require any plugins (like Flash, Java, Silverlight or Unity). It will still be possible to use desktop C# client and play together on same servers.

See HexGL and Trigger Rally Version 2 games to check if you will be able to run MD in web browser.
WebGL works best on Windows Vista, 7 and 8, using Google Chrome or Firefox. To run on Windows XP you have to unlock WebGL. WebGL also works on Linux, Mac and even Android.

21.10.2012, 18:15 | LambdaRogue 1.7 - End of an Era

LambdaRogue: The Book of Stars - Sun, 10/21/2012 - 17:15

I want to provide some updates about the future of LambdaRogue.

As you know, the next update will be 1.7. As most major updates, it will have a name attached, which, in this case, will be "End of an Era". What does this mean?

  • LambdaRogue 1.7 aka "End of an Era" will tie up some loose ends, both of the story and the game mechanics. This also includes a new questline (a very melancholic one, I can tell you.)
  • LambdaRogue 1.7 will also include the new 40x80 tileset currently done by Cecilia. (And the tiles that are already finished on my HDD look great!)

But End of an Era also means end of LambdaRogue development.

Yes, that's right, LR 1.7 will be the final update, the "definitive version" of the game. No more updates will come. What are the reasons for this?

LambdaRogue development started in 2006. I devoted more than 6 years to the growth of this game, and it has reached a state where everything I wanted to achieve with it has been done.

LambdaRogue is one of the most accessible roguelikes currently available, and still one of the few roguelikes that somehow manage to have a good balance between random game mechanics and fixed story. The story is complete, the game is stable, it is quite balanced -- it is simply finished.

Is this the end?

Well, I said "end of an era", but not "end of the world", and actually, I have many ideas for expanding the game world and its lore.

So, while LambdaRogue, as piece of software as it is, won't receive any more updates after 1.7, it does not mean that the brave people of Herbstwelt have to cope without their creator (i.e. me ;-) ) from now on.

Instead, it's time for something new. For something that gives me all the time and space and scale for telling Herbstwelt's story once again.

Exciting times lay ahead of us. :-)

Version 0.0.3 released

FreeLords - Mon, 10/08/2012 - 20:44

Hi,

we want to announce the first version again with a GUI. Nothing fancy,
essentially you can connect to the server and try out some chatting, but
with a GUI. Behind the scenes, we have also paved the way for loading a scenario; integrating this with the client/server code will be the next
goal.

The detailed changes:
- added configuration and i18n facilities (not yet used)
- game data can be loaded from a scenario description and set up
- added server contexts ("rooms") to allow players to perform different actions on the server (among other things, servers can in principle host multiple games)
- added first GUI elements and dialogs

May the wiki help you discover the basics of the game while playing 0.8.2 while we all anticipate 0.8.4!

To log in you need a ChaosForge forum account with at least one post (just say hello in the Wiki thread!).

Black Omega progress update

Babylon 5: I’ve Found Her - Mon, 09/24/2012 - 00:00

Dear players, fans and followers!

This is another "status update", and again, it's so long overdue! For that, again, we apologize. But as always, this happens because the team is so busy with game development and not because there's nothing to tell you about. So, this mostly technical update will show you what's currently happening in the area of Black Omega development.

AliensRL 0.8.2 RELEASED!

AliensRL - Fri, 09/07/2012 - 21:13

AliensRL has too long lingered in the shadow of it’s older cousin. Time to resume active development, for among all of ChaosForge roguelikes, this is the one with the most potential. The 0.8.2 release brings you several notable changes, and despite that is just a stepping stone on what AliensRL can become with your support!

Read below for details or check the forum for the ChaosForge announcement. Start downloading from the downloads section now, and don’t forget to come back and donate if you like it and would want to see further development!

The most obvious change is the completely rewritten level generator, which not only produces much more interesting levels to explore, but also gives every tower a distinctive style. To compliment the generator, several new features were added, such as glass walls that you can see through and a basic terminal implementation.

The terminals themselves are a start of the implementation of a very antcipated feature. Along with them come the first possibilities of hacking — a hero with some technical skill (boosted by a few multi-tools) can now power down proximity doors, locate elevators or even restore light to levels that are dark! Even broken elevators can be fixed if you have the right skills and equipment.

The equipment section was standarized as well as expanded. Several consumable items have been added, among them the forementioned mult-tools, armor packs (that can fix your armor which does degrade now), a few medical items (stimpacks!) and even a portable sentry turret!

To go with the new equipment we upgraded and streamlined the interface. Items now operate on user modifiable quickslots, general game options have been moved to a game menu, running is now SHIFT+direction, SPACE for using elevators and closing doors and several other tweaks have been added, some of them forshadowing the changes to come!

The arsenal has also been severly augmented, by two new major weapons — the 5.56 ammo weapons which serve as middle ground between 9mm and pulse weapons, and the eagerly awaited flamer (which is a bit overpowered now, so take advantage of this :). Additionaly several variants of the existing weapons are to be found. Oh, and everything can be now destroyed (with the right firepower).

The game now runs in pseudo-console by default, but die-hard-ASCII fans will be happy to learn that the same executable can run in standard console by running with the -console parameter or editing you config.lua.

Versions for Windows, Linux (32 and 64 bit) and Mac OS X (64 bit) are provided.

Like us on Facebook, Twitter ( @epyoncf and @chaosforge_org ) and/or Google+ and join the forum to be updated with further developments.

Most of all, good luck and have fun!

Update of Hexxagon to v1.0.2, fixing compile errors.

Hexxagon - Fri, 08/24/2012 - 17:21

I have updated the sourcecode a bit as people have had problems compiling Hexxagon lately. Newer versions of g++ (v4.7) have bugfixes and new restrictions.

A big thank you to Dan Johnson that notified me of the problem and supplied a patch to fix the problem.

ModDB has turned 10 years old

World of Padman - Sat, 08/18/2012 - 19:27
A couple of days ago ModDB celebrated its 10th birthday and ten years is a very long lifetime compared to other websites. Unbelievable, no one had heard of Facebook or even Twitter at that time. For some of us, being members of ModDB since 2002, we have witnessed the different designs and development stages of the good old Mod Database up to its current appearance and improvements plus the spin-offs IndieDB and Desura.

In the 10 years of ModDB history the community has reached a million members, more than 80,000 news posts have been released, 30,000 downloads and 25,000 videos have been added to the site. The first news posting on our ModDB game profile page is dated August 19th 2002 and was released exactly 10 years ago by ENTE. It's about a new comment function on ModDB and Scott Reismanis aka INtense! and founder of ModDB was the first in line commenting it.

We wish Scott and his team all the best for the upcoming 10 years of ModDB.

Meet us at GamesCom 2012

World of Padman - Wed, 08/15/2012 - 05:45

Three crazy members (watch the photo) of the World of Padman development team met at GamesCom in Cologne, the biggest international gaming expo of Europe, back in 2010. Two years later doomdragon, ENTE and Kai will meet there again on Thursday, August 16th. If you'll join the gaming masses too, watch out for those blue shirts with the WoP icon on it. If you like, don't hesitate to get in contact with us. Maybe you have to search a little, because we are there as simple visitors like you and everyone else. It would be nice to meet some community members or WoP fans. See you there and come back visiting our website a few days later. We will prepare some expo-report for you.
